Months after Meta went on a billion-dollar hiring spree to assemble a dream team for its ambitious AI Superintelligence Labs, Mark Zuckerberg is now slamming the brakes, with around 600 employees set to lose their jobs in a bid to keep the company nimble and competitive. According to an internal memo cited by Bloomberg, employees in Meta’s AI division were informed of the cuts on October 22, marking a sudden shift for one of the world’s biggest backers of artificial intelligence.

Here’s how it all unfolded, and what it means for Meta’s AI push in 5 points.

Meta trims 600 jobs in AI Superintelligence Labs

Meta’s AI Superintelligence Labs, the brainchild of CEO Mark Zuckerberg, will part ways with roughly 600 employees, according to an internal memo seen by Bloomberg. The move comes just months after the company splurged on high-profile hires from Apple, OpenAI, Google, Anthropic, and Elon Musk’s xAI.

Interestingly, Meta’s newly-formed TBD Lab, a select group made up of many of these star recruits, remains untouched by the layoffs. The company’s top brass say the decision is part of an internal reset to streamline teams and remove layers of management.

Meta’s AI chief calls it a move towards “efficiency”

Meta’s chief AI officer Alexandr Wang said the decision was driven by a need to simplify workflows and make the team leaner. “By reducing the size of our team, fewer conversations will be required to make a decision, and each person will be more load-bearing and have more scope and impact,” Wang wrote in a memo to employees as reported by Bloomberg.

In essence, the company hopes a smaller team will move faster, a common refrain in Silicon Valley’s “move fast or fall behind” philosophy.

Laid-off employees encouraged to reapply elsewhere at Meta

The layoffs aren’t necessarily a one-way exit. A person familiar with the situation told Bloomberg that Meta is encouraging affected employees to apply for other internal roles. The company reportedly intends to continue hiring for its AI teams in other areas, suggesting this is less about downsizing and more about reorganisation.

The initial report on the job cuts came from Axios, which said the layoffs were part of a broader effort to rebalance teams after Meta’s recent hiring surge.

Meta froze AI hiring just weeks earlier

Back in August, the Wall Street Journal revealed that Meta had paused hiring for its AI division, signalling that a shake-up was on the horizon. A company spokesperson later told Reuters that the pause was merely “basic organisational planning,” adding that Meta was solidifying the structure of its new superintelligence unit after rapid expansion.

This reorganisation now appears to have arrived, complete with pink slips.

Zuckerberg’s aggressive AI bets spark mixed reactions

Zuckerberg has been spending heavily to keep pace with OpenAI and Google, calling AI development “a top priority.” Reports earlier this year claimed Meta was offering $100–$200 million pay packages to lure AI talent from rivals, claims the CEO later dismissed as “inaccurate,” though he admitted it’s a “hot market” and worth investing in.

The high-stakes talent war hasn’t been without drama. By August, at least three prominent hires, Rishabh Agarwal, Avi Verma, and Ethan Knight, had already left Meta, with two rejoining Sam Altman’s OpenAI. Altman, in turn, criticised Meta’s poaching tactics in an internal memo, calling them “distasteful.”

Zuckerberg’s strategy seems to follow hire fast, cut faster, and keep Meta’s AI unit agile in an industry moving at lightning speed. But for those caught in this latest cull, the AI arms race is proving just as brutal as it is expensive.
