Elon Musk’s satellite internet company, Starlink to launch in India

It looks like Elon Musk is finally beaming his next big idea to India, quite literally. SpaceX’s satellite internet venture, Starlink, has begun crucial security tests in the country, marking one of the final steps before launching its commercial broadband services. If all goes smoothly and regulators move quickly, Musk could be selling high-speed satellite internet to Indian households as early as 2026.

An official told The Economic Times that Starlink has requested 600 gigabits per second of bandwidth over India using its Gen 1 satellite constellation, and that the spectrum has been provisionally allocated for security compliance demonstrations. Here is the full story in 5 points.

Security checks: Starlink clears a major hurdle

Starlink has started a series of security evaluations, a mandatory step for any foreign or domestic telecom operator entering India. These tests are part of the government’s clearance process before a company can beam data across the country’s skies.

According to people familiar with the matter, as reported by Bloomberg, once the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) finalises pricing guidelines for satellite services, expected by the end of the year, Starlink could flip the switch on its operations within months. In short, the countdown to a 2026 launch has officially begun.

India’s space race gets crowded

India’s satellite broadband market is heating up faster than a SpaceX booster re-entry. With Prime Minister Narendra Modi opening the doors of the space economy to private players, multiple firms are scrambling to fill the gaps left by patchy mobile and fibre networks, especially in rural areas.

Starlink’s main rivals include Reliance Jio’s Space Fibre and Eutelsat’s OneWeb, but Musk’s outfit seems to be going for orbital dominance. Sources indicate that SpaceX plans to build at least 10 satellite gateways across India, more than triple the number its competitors have on the blueprint.

Mumbai becomes Mission Control

If there’s a launchpad for Starlink’s India ambitions, it’s Mumbai. SpaceX has already completed three ground stations in the city, which insiders describe as the company’s local command hub. Officials are reportedly gearing up for on-site inspections soon.

According to the media reports, the infrastructure rollout is well underway. Once the green light comes through, Starlink could begin beaming signals across the subcontinent within months.

Starlink’s big India play

Unlike its rivals, who are eyeing corporate and government clients, Starlink is going straight for retail consumers. The company wants to target India’s massive population of under-connected households, particularly in rural regions where reliable internet is still a luxury.

“Starlink’s constellation of low-orbit satellites could transform connectivity for millions,” said one person familiar with SpaceX’s plans. Insiders say Musk’s team is also banking on brand power, and his own tech-world stardom to lure affluent, gadget-loving users in cities willing to pay extra for seamless, high-speed broadband.

If successful, it would give SpaceX a foothold in one of the world’s largest internet markets, and help offset its absence from China, where foreign telecom operators remain locked out.

Another frontier for SpaceX

Starlink’s Indian debut would mark Elon Musk’s second big move in the country, following Tesla’s entry earlier this year with its first showrooms. The billionaire even met Prime Minister Modi during that visit, signalling his intent to make India a major market for both his car and space ventures.

Telecom minister Jyotiraditya Scindia recently reinforced that India aims to provide citizens with a mix of “terrestrial, fibre and satellite” communication options, an open invitation to global providers like SpaceX.

If all stars align and the bureaucracy doesn’t slow the rocket, Starlink could be live in India by early 2026, bringing Musk’s dream of global satellite internet coverage a step closer to reality. And this time, the signal won’t just be strong, it’ll be stellar.
