OnePlus likes to call it a “value flagship”, and while the definition of that term may vary, the phone does try to offer flagship-like elements at a relatively lower price. From a massive battery to a brand-new Snapdragon chip, the OnePlus 15R brings a mix of strong upgrades and a few noticeable compromises. First, the OnePlus 15R borrows heavily from the OnePlus 15 in terms of design and software experience. The phone looks almost identical to the flagship model and runs the same version of OxygenOS, giving users a familiar OnePlus feel. Despite sharing dimensions and weight close to the Nord 5, the 15R uses more premium materials, helping it stand out slightly in hand.
Second, the display is large, sharp, and smooth but not without limitations. The OnePlus 15R features a 6.83-inch LTPS Super AMOLED panel with a 1.5K resolution. On paper, it supports refresh rates of up to 165Hz, which sounds impressive. However, this high refresh rate is limited to a small number of supported games. Outside of those titles, the display mostly runs at 120Hz, making the headline number less useful for everyday use. Since it is an LTPS panel and not LTPO, the refresh rate also cannot drop to 1Hz to save power, with 60Hz being the lowest option.
Third, performance is driven by the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 chipset, making the OnePlus 15R the first phone to debut this processor. While it is not clocked as aggressively as the Elite variant, the chip still delivers strong performance that is comparable to last year’s flagship phones. Daily usage feels smooth, gaming performance is solid, and OnePlus has added a new 360-degree cooling system. That said, heat management could have been better during extended gaming sessions.
Fourth, battery life is easily the biggest highlight of the OnePlus 15R. The phone packs a massive 7,400mAh battery, which is even larger than the one found on the OnePlus 15. In real-world use, this translates to excellent endurance, with the phone comfortably lasting up to two days on moderate usage and around a day and a half even with heavy use. Charging is handled by 80W SuperVOOC technology, which is slower than the OnePlus 15 flagship’s 120W system but still fast enough for most users.
Fifth, cameras are where the OnePlus 15R takes a little step back. The phone comes with a dual rear camera setup, featuring a 50MP main sensor and an 8MP ultra-wide lens. There is no telephoto camera, which is disappointing, especially considering that last year’s 13R did offer one. While the main camera can deliver good details, contrast, and colours, the lack of a telephoto lens limits versatility and makes the downgrade noticeable for photography enthusiasts.
Sixth, despite its mid-premium positioning, the OnePlus 15R does not compromise on durability and security features. The phone carries IP68 and IP69 ratings for dust and water resistance, almost matching the flagship 15 model. It also includes an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor for quick unlocking. However, instead of Corning’s toughest glass, OnePlus has opted for its custom Panda glass, which may not be as resistant to accidental drops.
