India and the US are actively engaging in trade discussions as both nations explore ways to strengthen economic ties. A high-level Indian delegation, led by the Commerce and Industries Minister, visited the US from September 22-24, 2025 to hold meetings with government officials, business leaders, and investors, according to the official statement by India’s Commerce ministry.
“The Minister met US Trade Representative Ambassador Jamieson Greer and Mr Sergio Gor, US Ambassador-designate to India, apart from engaging with leading American businesses and investors,” mentioned the statement.
Discussions focused on the possible framework of a new trade agreement aimed at benefiting both sides.
Officials described the talks as “constructive,” with both countries exchanging views on key issues. India is seeking relief from the 25% tariffs currently imposed by the US, while Washington is urging New Delhi to increase energy trade.
The engagement with American businesses was also positive, with several executives reaffirming their confidence in India’s growth prospects and expressing interest in expanding operations.
Government officials told Business Today TV that negotiations are ongoing with a “positive intent.” The discussions are also examining potential implications for India’s pharmaceutical sector, though details will emerge only after the full documentation is released.
Despite optimism, geopolitical factors continue to influence the talks. President Donald Trump has added tariffs on Indian imports of Russian oil as part of broader measures against Russia following the Ukraine war. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio noted that energy and tariffs remain sensitive points in the bilateral relationship.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent emphasised in a television interview that India is expected to gradually reduce its Russian energy purchases, signalling that energy security remains central to negotiations.
With both sides committed to dialogue, officials hope for an early, mutually beneficial trade agreement. While challenges remain, the active discussions reflect a shared desire to deepen economic cooperation and expand business engagement between India and the United States.
