Why has the EU imposed a fine on X?
The fine on X has been issued under the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA). On Friday, the European Commission claimed that the platform had misled users with its blue checkmark system and had failed to provide researchers with access to necessary data. The bluetick on X is available to users who subscribe to the platform’s Premium plans.
According to regulators, these issues represented a “deceptive design” and insufficient ad transparency, potentially exposing users to manipulation and scams. The commission emphasised the precedent-setting nature of the decision. It is the first time a major tech company has faced a penalty under DSA.
The penalty was the result of a probe that began in December 2023 and intensified as Musk became a close adviser to former President Trump. The European Commission, led by digital chief Henna Virkkunen, stated, “It took time because our teams wanted to make sure that we had a strong legal basis.”
How did Elon Musk react?
After the fine was imposed, Elon Musk took to X to slam the European Union. He claimed that member states of the bloc should regain their sovereignty in the best interests of their people. Musk wrote, “The EU should be abolished, and sovereignty returned to individual countries, so that governments can better represent their people.”
After a user reposted the tech billionaire’s comments, Musk reinforced his words and said, “I mean it. Not kidding.” Elon Musk clarified that he was not against Europe as a whole, but was not happy with the bureaucrats leading the EU. He added, “I love Europe, but not the bureaucratic monster that is the EU.”

Vice President JD Vance posted, “The EU should be supporting free speech, not attacking American companies over garbage,” reflecting American concerns about perceived overreach by European regulators. Vance and Musk share good relations. Elon Musk was one of the key contributors to President Donald Trump’s election campaign, and even created the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
