Benchmark stock market indices closed marginally lower on Tuesday, as investors remained cautious in the last few trading sessions of 2025. FII outflows also weighed on market sentiment.
The S&P BSE Sensex lost 20.46 points to close at 84,675.08, while the NSE Nifty50 was down by just 3.25 points to end at 25,938.85.
Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Investments Limited, said that the domestic market remained volatile and ended the monthly expiry day flat, despite supportive global cues and selective value buying.
“A stronger rupee provided some respite, yet overall sentiment stayed cautious amid persistent FII outflows,” he added.
Tata Steel rose 2.03%, followed closely by Mahindra and Mahindra, which gained 2.00%. Bajaj Finserv added 1.66%, Axis Bank climbed 1.13%, and Bharti Airtel was up 0.91%, leading the list of gainers on the Sensex.
On the other hand, the market also saw clear pressure on the downside, highlighting a weak undertone in several pockets. Eternal emerged as the biggest loser, falling 2.10%. InterGlobe Aviation (IndiGo) dropped 1.37%, Infosys slipped 1.28%, Asian Paints declined 1.09%, and UltraTech Cement fell 0.84%.
“Sector-wise, while auto stocks gained on robust IIP data, metal stocks gained due to higher metal prices enabling better realisations. Similarly, PSU banks advanced on improved asset quality,” said Nair.
“Looking ahead, the market is anticipated to stay sideways, awaiting more pronounced outcomes from US-India trade talks and the Q3 results calendar,” he added.
