Samsung is gearing up to host the next Galaxy Unpacked event later this month. In a new teaser, the company has confirmed that the event will be held on July 22 in London. As is the case with unpacked events in July, the focus will be on what Samsung has in terms of new foldables. And if the rumours are true, the Korean giant has been cooking.
In a post on X, Samsung shared a clip announcing the date for the Galaxy Unpacked event. The teaser shows a rectangular ticket which is then cropped from the top. The remainder of the ticket has a shape more of a wide rectangle, likely a reference to the rumoured Galaxy Z “wide” Fold that may be called the Z Fold 8 Ultra – a foldable with a bookstyle form factor, akin to the rumoured iPhone Fold.
The ticket also has the Galaxy Unpacked symbol that the company has used for some time now, but on the top left, you see the words, “A new shape unfolds.” This could be another reference to the wide foldable.
How to watch Galaxy Unpacked?
Before we delve deeper into what Samsung might have in store with the event, let’s discuss how you can tune in. Samsung will livestream the Galaxy Unpacked event on July 22. The event will start at 6:30 pm IST. You can watch it live on Samsung’s YouTube channel or its website.
Ahead of the event, Samsung has also opened reservations for upcoming Galaxy devices, with a $30 (roughly Rs 2,850) credit for customers who later complete a pre-order in the US.
Samsung Galaxy Unpacked: What to expect?
The company has not named the products it plans to show at Galaxy Unpacked. But teasers and leaks point towards new foldable phones, updates to the Galaxy Watch line and a possible appearance for Samsung’s smart glasses.
Samsung’s summer Unpacked event is usually where it refreshes its Z Fold and Z Flip line-up. This year, reports suggest, the company could unveil three foldables. While we can expect to see the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and the Z Flip 8, all eyes are likely to be on the Galaxy Z Wide Fold that may be called the Z Fold 8 Ultra.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra and Z Fold 8
The Z Fold 8 Ultra would be the biggest change when it comes to Samsung’s foldable devices since the original Galaxy Fold was launched in 2019. Though the company did release the Galaxy Z TriFold in December last year, the device had a limited production run.
As per reports, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra is likely to pack a 7.6-inch inner display with a 4:3 aspect ratio. This is expected to make video streaming a more immersive experience with fewer black bars when compared to the regular Galaxy Z Fold’s 1:1 aspect ratio. On the outside, you can expect a 5.5-inch cover screen. Both panels will likely be high-refresh rate AMOLED displays.
The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra is tipped to weigh around 201 grams, with a thickness of 4.5 mm when unfolded, and 9,7 mm when folded. Some leaks also claim Samsung may cut the rear camera system from three sensors to two on this model to keep manufacturing costs under control.
For the standard Galaxy Z Fold 8, reports suggest a more familiar design closer to the current Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7. It is expected to get a new Snapdragon chip – likely the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, a less visible crease and a stronger rear camera system, with reports pointing to a 200-megapixel main camera. Other tipped upgrades include faster charging and a 5,000mAh battery.
The Galaxy Z Flip 8 is also widely expected to appear at the event. Reports suggest it will follow the same broad design language as the Galaxy Z Flip 7, but with upgraded internals, a redesigned hinge, a lighter build, and a less visible crease.
Samsung Galaxy Watch 9 and Watch Ultra 2
Beyond phones, firmware updates and certification filings have led to expectations of two new smartwatches at the event – the Galaxy Watch 9 and the Galaxy Watch Ultra 2. The Ultra 2, which is Samsung’s more rugged and outdoor-focused model, is rumoured to get a battery increase to as much as 800mAh. Reports also mention classic numbers on the watch face, a thinner bezel and improved side buttons.
The Galaxy Watch 9 is similarly expected to receive a modest battery boost, new processors, refreshed designs and new health-tracking features. At the same time, reports suggest Samsung may skip a new Galaxy Watch Classic this year.
Samsung Galaxy Glasses
While Google gave us a glimpse of Samsung’s upcoming smartglasses during its I/O event earlier this year, we can expect to find out more about the wearables at Galaxy Unpacked this month.
The Samsung smartglasses were developed with Warby Parker and Gentle Monster. While details remain limited, reports suggest the glasses may be presented as Galaxy Glasses and could work more like Meta’s smart glasses than a full AR headset.
The Galaxy Glasses are expected to include cameras, microphones and Google’s Gemini assistant, but pricing and availability remain unclear.
Apart from the smartglasses, we may also hear about the Galaxy Ring 2 at the event. Though it is likely that Samsung will not launch the Galaxy Ring 2 this month. Rather, it may be launched sometime next year.
