A Delhi court on Thursday dismissed a complaint that sought registration of an FIR against Congress leader Sonia Gandhi over allegations related to her name in the voter list before she became an Indian citizen.
The Rouse Avenue Court pronounced its order on a plea that accused Gandhi of being included in the Delhi voters’ list in 1980, despite acquiring Indian citizenship only on April 30, 1983.
The complaint was filed by a lawyer, who urged the court to direct registration of an FIR and sought directions to police to investigate the matter. The complainant alleged that Gandhi’s name was included in the voters’ list in 1980 and then deleted in 1982.
The complainant argued that Gandhi formally acquired Indian citizenship on April 30, 1983, yet her name appeared in the 1980 Delhi voters’ roll. The petition insisted that this warranted a police investigation.
The BJP also alleged that Congress MP Sonia Gandhi’s name appeared on the electoral rolls three years before she became an Indian citizen as it clapped back at the opposition’s claims of voter fraud in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.
Former Union Minister and BJP MP Anurag Thakur, addressing a press conference, claimed Sonia Gandhi, who was born in Italy, was added to the voter list in 1980, three years before she became an Indian citizen.
According to the Representation of the People Act, 1950, a person who is not a citizen of India is not eligible for registration on the electoral rolls.
However, the court passed its order refusing to direct the registration of an FIR and dismissed the complaint.
