Apple is gearing up for its next big showcase, and all eyes are on the iPhone 17 Air, which is expected to be the highlight of the company’s “Awe Dropping” launch event scheduled for September 9. The new model is being seen as one of the most dramatic changes to the iPhone lineup since the introduction of the iPhone X back in 2017. If reports are accurate, the iPhone 17 Air will not just be another addition to Apple’s catalogue but a complete change in design philosophy. Design, build and other leaks
What makes this phone stand out is its slim profile. The iPhone 17 Air is said to measure only 5.5mm at its thinnest point, making it the slimmest iPhone Apple has ever released. For comparison, the iPhone 16 had a thickness of 7.8mm, so the new model is more than 2mm thinner. This drastic reduction has been achieved by redesigning the internal layout and using lighter materials. The phone will reportedly feature a horizontal pill-shaped camera bump, which allows Apple to fit a large 48-megapixel wide sensor despite the compact frame.
The size of the display is another change. Instead of the 6.7-inch panel on the iPhone 16 Plus, the new iPhone 17 Air will sport a 6.6-inch screen. This small reduction allows Apple to balance thinness with usability. Even with the slightly smaller screen, the iPhone 17 Air is expected to feel larger because of its lightweight build, with reports suggesting the phone may weigh just around 145 grams. The use of a hybrid titanium-aluminium frame keeps it sturdy while cutting down on bulk.
On the durability front, Apple is reportedly moving to a design that uses less glass compared to current iPhones. This could help improve resistance against accidental drops. But some compromises were necessary to achieve the thin design. The USB-C port is not aligned at the centre of the frame and the speaker grille design has been simplified with fewer cutouts, as per leaks. The iPhone 17 Air could be offered in a fresh colour palette that includes black, white, light gold, and a light blue option.
Display, chipset
Apple is turning to Samsung’s LTPO OLED panels, the same ones found in the iPhone 16 Pro models. These panels promise a 30 per cent brightness boost compared to the iPhone 16 display. The iPhone 17 Air is also expected to support 120Hz ProMotion refresh rates, a feature that was earlier limited to Apple’s Pro lineup. However, whether the display will support always-on mode is still unclear, as some leaks suggest the panel may not be able to drop its refresh rate down to 1Hz.
The iPhone 17 Air is likely to be powered by Apple’s new A19 chipset, though there are rumours it might use a slightly trimmed-down version of the A19 Pro with one less GPU core. The phone will carry 12GB RAM, putting it on par with the Pro models. Apple is also said to be adopting vapour chamber cooling technology across the iPhone 17 series, which should help maintain performance during heavy use.
Battery, camera setup
Battery life, however, could be a concern. At just 5.5mm thick, there isn’t much room for a large cell. Leaks suggest the iPhone 17 Air may pack a 2,800mAh battery, which is about the same size Apple used in the iPhone 12. While this may not sound impressive compared to modern standards, Apple is reportedly betting on efficiency gains from the processor, high-density battery tech, and the new C1 modem to deliver acceptable endurance. Charging support will include Qi 2.2 wireless charging at speeds of up to 25W, which is on par with Apple’s MagSafe system.
The new iPhone 17 model will reportedly ship with a single 48-megapixel wide rear camera, which means features like spatial video recording may not be available. On the other hand, the front camera is getting a boost, with all iPhone 17 models moving to a 24-megapixel sensor, double the resolution of the iPhone 16’s selfie camera.
Connectivity upgrades are also on the cards. While the phone will use Apple’s new in-house Wi-Fi chip that supports Wi-Fi 7, the inclusion of the C1 modem means it won’t support the faster mmWave 5G bands. Other features expected on the device include the Action Button, MagSafe charging support, and the removal of the SIM tray in more markets.
