Arvind Kejriwal, chief of the Aam Aadmi Party, announced on Wednesday that the Trinamool Congress will support his party in the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections. While the Congress lacks support from any INDIA bloc ally in the upcoming elections, its rival AAP now has the backing of major parties such as Trinamool and the Samajwadi Party.
Furthermore, the Shiv Sena (UBT) intends to campaign in support of Arvind Kejriwal and AAP in the coming days. According to sources, Kejriwal has contacted Uddhav Thackeray.
Kejriwal thanked West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for supporting the AAP in the upcoming elections.
“TMC has declared support for AAP in the Delhi elections. I am personally grateful to Mamta Didi. Thank you, Didi. “You have always supported and blessed us in both good and bad times,” he wrote in a post on X.
In December, during an AAP-organized Mahila Adalat, Samajwadi Party chief and Kannauj MP Akhilesh Yadav announced his support for the AAP in the Delhi Assembly elections.
Notably, the AAP has decided to contest the upcoming Assembly elections alone, despite having formed an alliance with the Congress for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The ruling AAP won 67 and 62 seats in the 2015 and 2020 elections, respectively, and is now aiming for a hat-trick in the capital.
The AAP recently stated that it would consult with other INDIA bloc parties to remove the Congress from the alliance after filing a complaint against Arvind Kejriwal, accusing him of “misleading and deceiving” the public with promises of “non-existent” welfare schemes.
Meanwhile, the Congress’ top leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and Mallikarjun Kharge, are not campaigning for the Delhi Assembly elections. Instead, the Congress campaign has relied heavily on second-tier leaders and MPs recruited from other states.
Polling for the 70-member Delhi Assembly will take place on February 5, with results announced on February 8.
