A six-month-old baby tested positive for HMPV at Hiranandani Hospital in Mumbai’s Powai, bringing the total number of respiratory illness cases to 11. So far, two cases have been reported in Bengaluru, one in Gujarat, two in Chennai, three in Kolkata, and now three in Maharashtra.
Former AIIMS Director Dr Randeep Guleria stated, “HMPV is not a new virus; it is an old one. It’s been there for quite some time. Viruses typically cause mild illness, but at extremes of age, in infants and young children, the elderly, or those with comorbidities, it can cause pneumonia in both young and old people, resulting in breathing problems and hospitalization.” “The virus is usually self-limiting, so you only need symptomatic treatment. Take fever-reducing medication, stay hydrated, and eat well,” he added, urging people to avoid crowded places to prevent the infection from spreading.
Union Health Minister JP Nadda stated, “Health experts have clarified that #HMPV is not a new virus.” There is no need to worry. We are closely monitoring the situation.” Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak addressed concerns about the HMPV virus. Pathak assured the public that the government is proceeding with complete caution. The Patna administration has urged residents to remain calm and follow the guidelines issued by the Central and Bihar governments in response to HMPV cases reported in various parts of the country.
According to health experts, even though there is no vaccine for HMPV, a regular flu shot or three doses of Covid vaccine will make you immune to it.
