In the Kanpur Lamborghini crash, police has said that businessman KK Mishra’s son Shivam Mishra was behind the wheel and a chargesheet will be filed shortly.
On Sunday, at least three people were injured after a speeding Lamborghini, allegedly driven by Shivam, rammed into them on Kanpur’s VIP Road. While no arrests have been made yet, Shivam’s lawyer had earlier claimed that the car was being driven by a hired driver and not Shivam whose father is a tobacco baron.
“Shivam was not driving. His health is fragile. An application has been moved before the court and all proceedings will follow the legal process. The matter will be heard on Tuesday,” Mrityunjay Singh, the lawyer representing Mishras, had said earlier, as per HT.
His family made a differing claim saying that Shivam had a seizure while driving, which caused the accident. However, police and eyewitnesses confirmed that it was the tobacco baron’s son who was driving the car with cops saying that Shivam was in an inebriated state at the time of the accident.
The father of the accused on Tuesday also denied police claims that Shivam was driving the car
An official also told HT that the accused will undergo a medical examination to check whether epilepsy or another medical condition could have contributed to the crash.
“If the tests show that he was medically unfit to drive, we will examine how he obtained a driving licence,” said commissioner of police Raghubir Lal, adding that the role of the Regional Transport Office staff would also be scrutinised.
What the father said
KK Mishra also said that a hired driver was behind the wheel while Shivam was unwell and unconscious, PTI reported. He said both Shivam and the driver were inside the car and that there were technical issues with the car the day before the crash.
“A driver and Shivam were in the car. I don’t know who was driving the car. It will be investigated. There was an issue with the Lamborghini car a day prior to the accident. Mechanics resolved the technical problem. The next day, Shivam and the driver took the car for testing,” he was quoted as saying.
According to Mishra, while returning from Civil Lines, Shivam became unconscious, causing the car to slow after an autorickshaw hit it. The locked car window prevented the driver from opening it, and their security staff broke the glass to pull Shivam out.
What eyewitnesses saw
Eyewitnesses had said that they gathered around the car after the crash and stopped the bouncers from whisking Shivam away. The 26-year-old was taken to a hospital.
A new video from the accident shows Mishra being dragged out of the car, corroborating eyewitness statements of bouncers trying to take Mishra away from the site. In a video seen by HT, a bouncer is seen pulling Mishra out of the Lamborghini Revuelto. The bouncer can be seen carrying him away while locals are heard in the background saying, “Keep making videos.” Due to the graphic nature of the video, it has not been shared for publication.
