Many retail investors feel confident when they place a large bet on a stock they believe they “understand.” But according to Abhishek Kumar, Sebi-registered investment adviser and founder of Sahaj Money, this confidence often turns into a costly mistake. After watching an investor proudly boast about a heavy bet on one company, Kumar said he felt compelled to explain why such decisions can quietly damage long-term wealth.
“This destroys 9 out of 10 portfolios,” he warned, adding that most people do not fully understand the risks they are taking.
THE PROBLEM WITH BETTING BIG
At first glance, a high-quality stock that has corrected sharply may look like a golden opportunity. Many investors convince themselves that they are simply “buying the dip.” But as Kumar explained, most people do not truly understand the risk they are taking.
“A big stock position isn’t diversified. It’s a lottery ticket dressed up as long-term investing,” he said. When such a stock falls by 30% or more, the emotional pressure can be intense. A steeper fall, say 50%, can set a portfolio back years, because it takes a 100% gain just to recover that loss, he explained.
WHEN “QUALITY” CREATES A TRAP
Investors often believe that a strong company is always a safe bet. But the market does not always reward quality at every price. When expectations shift, even the best companies can turn into painful long-term holds.
“High quality doesn’t mean buy at any price,” Kumar warned. Once optimism fades, many investors find themselves stuck, wondering how a trusted name became a value trap.
CONFUSING TRADING WITH INVESTING
Another common mistake is mixing long-term investing with short-term trading behaviour. Many investors watch prices every day and plan to “book profits” when a stock rises. This, Kumar said, creates emotional decision-making.
“If you’re watching it daily, you’re emotionally attached. Emotions destroy wealth,” he said. True long-term investing requires patience, not constant monitoring.
THE INFLUENCE OF INFLUENCER
Social media has amplified this problem. When a popular influencer reveals a large bet on a stock, thousands feel tempted to copy it without understanding the reasoning—or the risks.
“Herd behaviour ends careers,” Kumar said, stressing that people must think independently instead of following the loudest voice online.
THE BORING PATH THAT ACTUALLY WORKS
Despite the excitement around stock tips and dramatic bets, Kumar believes that wealth is built through calm, steady investing. He advised spreading money across several companies and staying invested for years.
Holding a diversified portfolio may feel uneventful, he admitted, but it is far safer than chasing quick wins.
“Does that sound boring? Yes. Does boring money compound into generational wealth? Also yes,” he said.
In other words, diversification, patience and calm thinking remain the simplest and most reliable tools for anyone looking to grow their money without losing sleep.
