Hemant Kumar Bhukar had already built a strong career in the semiconductor industry when he decided to try for a job at the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). According to The Times of India, the IIT Delhi graduate was working as a design engineer at Intel, but continued preparing for the ISRO selection process alongside his full-time job.
His effort resulted in an All India Rank 7 in the selection process for Scientist ‘A’ at ISRO. Hemant had spent nearly three years at Intel, where he worked on semiconductor chip design. Before joining the company, he completed his BTech and MTech in Semiconductors from IIT Delhi.
For someone with an established career at a global technology company, preparing for a competitive government recruitment process meant taking on another demanding schedule. Hemant continued working 7 to 8 hours a day at Intel while using his mornings, evenings and weekends for preparation.
His background in semiconductor engineering helped him build on the technical concepts he had already studied during his academic and professional career. Rather than leaving his corporate experience behind, he used it as part of his preparation for the ISRO selection process.
What did he do to secure AIR 7 position
Hemant’s academic journey began in Gothra Bhukran village in Rajasthan’s Sikar district. His success at IIT Delhi and later at Intel had already taken him far from his hometown, but he eventually decided to pursue a career in India’s space program.
The transition was not without its challenges. Balancing a full-time engineering role with exam preparation left limited time for study, requiring him to maintain a consistent routine outside office hours.
His achievement has also brought attention in his village and among students from similar backgrounds. His father, Shishpal Bhukar, works as an Additional Chief Engineer with the Public Works Department in Bikaner, while his mother, Sushila, is a homemaker.
Hemant has credited consistency and discipline for helping him stay on track during the preparation. “There are no shortcuts to success,” he said, stressing the importance of patience and continuing to work towards a goal.
His journey from IIT Delhi to Intel and then towards ISRO is quite impressive because he chose a career path that is different from the conventional route followed by many engineering graduates. Instead of giving up a stable corporate position before pursuing his next goal, Hemant prepared for the ISRO selection process while continuing with his job.
Securing AIR 7 has now put him among the successful candidates selected for the Scientist ‘A’ role at ISRO.
