India firmly denied the “insinuations” that were leveled against it in a report by a Canadian commission on Tuesday (January 28, 2025) night. The commission was investigating allegations that specific foreign governments were interfering in Canada’s elections.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) issued a powerful response, stating that it rejects the report’s “insinuations” regarding India.
It stated that Canada has been “consistently interfering” in India’s internal affairs.
“We have reviewed a report regarding purported interference-related activities.” Canada, in fact, has been consistently meddling in India’s internal affairs,” the MEA stated.
“This has also created an environment for illegal migration and organised criminal activities,” the organization reported in a statement.
“We reject the report’s insinuations on India and expect that the support system enabling illegal migration will not be further countenanced,” according to the report.
The Globe and Mail, a Canadian newspaper, reported that the Indian government was suspected of employing proxy agents to provide “clandestine financial support” to candidates from three political parties during a federal election.
Justice Marie-JosÃe Hogue was appointed by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to lead the commission of inquiry into the allegations of foreign interference in elections in September 2023.
According to Canadian media reports, the commission investigated allegations of election interference against China, Russia, and other parties.
In June of last year, the National Security and Intelligence Committee of Parliamentarians of Canada issued a report that concluded that certain parliamentarians were either willing or semi-willing participants in foreign interference.
