OpenAI is reportedly working on a new short video app that could change the way people consume content online. According to Wired, the company is preparing to launch a platform similar to TikTok, but with one major difference – every single clip on it will be created by artificial intelligence. The project is said to be powered by OpenAI’s upcoming video model, Sora 2, which the company is yet to make public.
The app, which is still in development, is expected to follow the familiar short-video format with a vertical feed and swipe-to-scroll design. But unlike TikTok or Instagram Reels, users will not have the option to upload their own videos from their camera roll. Instead, Sora 2 will be responsible for generating every video that appears in the feed. This puts the focus entirely on AI creativity rather than human uploads.
Reports suggest that inside this app, Sora 2 will be restricted to producing videos of 10 seconds or less. That is far shorter than TikTok’s current allowance of up to 10 minutes but somewhat mirrors the platform’s early days when videos were limited to 15 seconds. It is still unclear whether Sora 2 will be able to generate longer clips outside the app once it becomes more widely available.
Interestingly, the upcoming platform is also said to include an identity verification system. If a user chooses to verify themselves, the model will be able to create videos using their likeness. Other users can then tag or remix those likenesses within their own AI-generated clips. To avoid misuse, OpenAI reportedly plans to send a notification to individuals whenever their image is used, even if the video is not posted publicly.
The system will also have certain restrictions. Wired notes that OpenAI’s model may block some outputs due to copyright concerns. However, questions remain over how strong these measures will be. The Wall Street Journal has reported that instead of asking rights holders to give permission in advance, OpenAI will require them to opt out if they do not want their content appearing in Sora 2 videos.
The motivation behind this move seems to go beyond just showing off AI capabilities. Observers point out that the company may be looking to take advantage of the uncertainty surrounding TikTok’s future in the United States. With ByteDance under repeated pressure from the Trump administration to restructure its US business, OpenAI may see an opportunity to push its own alternative. At the same time, linking Sora 2 to a dedicated social platform could help OpenAI keep users within its ecosystem and reduce the chances of them switching to other video-generation tools.
