US President Donald Trump’s second inaugural address was a familiar echo of his first with a fierce critique of the country’s current state and grand promises to fix its problems.
Eight years ago, Trump had vowed to end “American carnage” immediately. On Monday, he declared that the country’s “decline” would come to an immediate end, ushering in “the golden age of America”.
Trump’s speech was notable for its lengthy list of policy proposals, which seemed more suited to a State of the Union address. However, the overarching themes remained quintessentially Trumpian, with the president positioning himself as a national saviour.
Trump broke with tradition by delivering his speech from inside the Capitol Rotunda due to the freezing temperatures outside. His audience consisted of several 100 elected officials, pro-Trump VIPs, and notable figures like tech mogul Elon Musk.
Some key takeaways from the speech:
A promise of an American ‘golden age’
In his second inaugural address, Trump declared the start of what he called a “golden age” for the United States. “The golden age of America begins right now,” he said. “Our sovereignty will be reclaimed. Our safety will be restored. The scales of justice will be rebalanced,” he added, promising a “stronger and far more exceptional nation” under his leadership. Trump painted a grim picture of the country’s current state, vowing to reverse its “decline” immediately and usher in a “thrilling new era”, as reported by the Associated Press (AP).
Criticism of past leaders
Without naming his predecessor Joe Biden, Trump criticised previous administrations for incompetence and corruption. He accused them of failing to handle domestic and global crises, prioritising foreign borders over American ones, and neglecting citizens’ needs. He promised swift action, including sending troops to the US-Mexico border, boosting domestic oil production, and imposing tariffs to benefit American workers.
‘Saved by God’
Trump linked his political and personal struggles to divine intervention, referencing an attempt on his life last year. “I was saved by God to make America great again,” he told supporters, drawing applause. The shooter was later identified as a local man with no connections to the Biden administration or government critics.
Wildfire claims and call to reclaim Panama Canal
Trump claimed that wildfires in Los Angeles were burning without sufficient response and presented himself as both a “peacemaker” and a strong leader, celebrating his role in brokering peace in Gaza while also pledging to reclaim the Panama Canal. “We’re taking it back!” he declared, hinting at military action if necessary.
