From cheaper oil to FII flows: How US midterm results could help Dalal Street

Lower crude prices could reduce India's import bill and inflation.

The outcome of the US midterm elections could have implications beyond American politics, with potential consequences for global financial markets, including India. A shift in congressional control could place limits on President Donald Trump’s ability to push aggressive trade and tariff policies, while expectations of easing geopolitical tensions have also contributed to a sharp decline in crude oil prices.

For Indian markets, these developments could create a more supportive external environment. Lower oil prices, a softer US dollar and a moderation in US bond yields could help ease some of the pressures on the domestic economy and potentially improve foreign investor sentiment. However, the extent of any benefit will depend on how these trends develop and whether they are sustained.

The impact is unlikely to be immediate or guaranteed, with domestic corporate earnings, valuations and global developments continuing to influence the direction of Dalal Street.

LOWER CRUDE PRICES EASE PRESSURE ON INDIA

One of the most important channels through which the US election outcome could affect Indian markets is crude oil.

India is heavily dependent on imports to meet its crude oil requirements. A sustained fall in global oil prices could help reduce the country’s import bill, ease pressure on the current account deficit and limit imported inflation.

This could be positive for sectors that are sensitive to fuel and raw material costs, including aviation, paints, chemicals and other energy-intensive industries. Oil marketing companies could also see changes in their margins, depending on how retail fuel prices and refining costs move.

Crude prices have come under pressure amid expectations that the new balance of power in the US Congress could increase pressure on Trump to pursue a diplomatic approach to the Iran conflict.

However, this remains an expectation rather than a certainty. The US President retains considerable authority over foreign policy, and any breakdown in diplomatic efforts or fresh escalation in the region could push oil prices higher again.

COULD A SOFTER DOLLAR AND LOWER US YIELDS SUPPORT FII FLOWS?

Another possible benefit for Indian equities could come through currency movements and global investment flows.

If the dollar weakens and US Treasury yields moderate, emerging markets such as India could become relatively more attractive to global investors. Lower yields in the US may reduce the appeal of dollar-denominated fixed-income investments, potentially encouraging some investors to look at equities and other assets in emerging economies.

A softer dollar could also ease pressure on the rupee, although currency movements will depend on several factors, including India’s trade balance, capital flows and the broader global environment.

If these conditions persist, they could support foreign institutional investor sentiment towards Indian equities. However, this does not mean that FII inflows will necessarily turn positive. Foreign investors will continue to assess Indian market valuations, earnings growth and the relative attractiveness of other emerging markets.

Dr Ravi Singh, Chief Research Officer at Master Capital Services Ltd, said the US midterm election outcome could have implications for global financial markets, including India.

“The US midterm election outcome could have implications for global financial markets, including India. A shift in congressional control may limit President Donald Trump’s ability to implement aggressive trade and tariff policies, potentially easing global trade uncertainty,” he added.

“This could improve investor sentiment towards emerging markets and support foreign institutional inflows into Indian equities. However, the impact is likely to be indirect rather than immediate. Domestic corporate earnings, crude oil prices, currency movements and global geopolitical developments will remain the key drivers of Indian markets,” Singh said.

The expert’s assessment underlines that any benefit for Dalal Street is likely to come through changes in the global investment environment rather than a direct impact of the US election result on Indian companies.

WHY THE IMPACT MAY NOT BE ENTIRELY POSITIVE

While the possibility of lower trade uncertainty could be positive for emerging markets, the change in congressional control could also bring fresh challenges for certain sectors.

Greater scrutiny of artificial intelligence, technology companies and data centre investments in the US could affect investor sentiment towards parts of the technology sector. This is relevant for Indian IT companies, whose business prospects are closely linked to technology spending by clients in the US and other developed markets.

There is also no guarantee that a Democratic-controlled Congress will lead to a major shift in US trade policy towards India. Trump retains executive powers over several trade-related decisions, and the election outcome alone does not establish that tariffs will be rolled back or that India-US trade negotiations will become easier.

For Indian markets, the direction of crude oil prices, the rupee, global interest rates and corporate earnings will remain important factors to watch.

A POTENTIAL TAILWIND, NOT A GUARANTEED RALLY

The US midterm election outcome could offer some support to Dalal Street if it contributes to lower global trade uncertainty, softer crude prices and more favourable currency and bond-market conditions.

For India, cheaper oil could be particularly helpful by easing pressure on the import bill and inflation, while a weaker dollar and lower US yields could potentially improve the appeal of emerging-market assets.

But these developments will need to translate into sustained changes in global financial conditions before they can have a meaningful impact on foreign investor flows and Indian equities. For now, the Democratic victory may provide a potential external tailwind for Dalal Street, but domestic earnings and economic fundamentals are likely to remain central to the market’s direction.
