A comment by a Y Combinator partner claiming that a single young professional using Claude AI could outperform the entire workforce of Accenture has drawn attention to how rapidly artificial intelligence is beginning to compress work that once relied on scale, experience and large teams. The remark, made in a social media post, has since fed into a wider discussion around the future of consulting, software development and professional services as AI tools take on a growing share of execution-heavy work.
The comment came from Tom Blomfield, who wrote, “The entire Accenture workforce is about to be outperformed by a 24-year-old who learned Claude Code last Tuesday.” The post quickly attracted replies questioning why the claim was limited to one firm. One user argued that the same logic could apply to consultants, lawyers, engineers, bankers, accountants and managers across industries. Blomfield responded briefly, “Because that would be a less punchy tweet.”
Though framed casually, the remark mirrors developments already taking place inside Anthropic, the company behind Claude. In February 2026, Anthropic executives acknowledged that AI now handles most coding work within the organisation, changing how engineers spend their time and how the company thinks about hiring.
Cofounder Jack Clark said Claude is currently writing “comfortably the majority” of the company’s code. If progress continues, he said, AI could be responsible for nearly all of it by the end of the year. Speaking on The Ezra Klein Show, Clark explained that this has altered the balance between junior and senior roles inside the company.
According to him, many tasks that once formed the entry point for younger engineers are now handled by AI systems. Routine implementation work, repetitive coding and standard fixes no longer require the same level of human involvement. What remains are decisions that demand experience – understanding system behaviour, anticipating problems and deciding which ideas are worth pursuing. As a result, Anthropic is placing greater weight on engineers with long experience and strong judgement.
Clark stressed that this does not mean the company is shrinking its engineering workforce. More people with software engineering skills work at Anthropic today than two years ago, and the company continues to hire actively. What has changed is the nature of the work engineers are expected to do. As Claude takes over basic execution, human effort is pushed toward the hardest and most nuanced parts of the job. Clark described this process as “O-ring automation,” where automation removes one bottleneck and draws human attention to the next.
These changes moved beyond internal operations with the launch of Claude Cowork on January 16, 2026. Designed as an enterprise-focused, agentic AI workspace, Claude Cowork allows AI agents to plan and execute multi-step tasks directly on a user’s computer. The effect intensified later that month when Anthropic introduced 11 automation plug-ins that allow Claude to independently complete workflows earlier handled by large teams or enterprise software platforms.
The market reaction, particularly in India, was swift. On February 3 and 4, the Nifty IT index saw its steepest fall since the Covid-era crash. Shares of Infosys, TCS, Wipro, HCLTech, LTIMindtree, and Coforge fell sharply, wiping out nearly Rs 2 lakh crore in market value in a single trading session.
Much of the concern centred on Claude Cowork’s legal automation tools. These systems can review contracts, non-disclosure agreements and compliance paperwork at volumes that once required large legal and operations teams. Work that earlier stretched across days or weeks can now be completed in minutes, raising difficult questions for industries built around scale and manpower.
