India’s annual retail inflation rose to 1.33% in December, up from 0.71% in November, according to data released by the Ministry of Statistics on Monday. The increase came as the pace of decline in food prices slowed compared to the previous month.
FOOD PRICES FALL AT A SLOWER PACE
Food prices declined 2.71% year-on-year in December, easing from a sharper fall of 3.91% recorded in November. The moderation in food inflation was a key factor behind the overall rise in headline inflation.
Vegetable prices continued to fall, but the rate of decline softened. Prices dropped 18.47% year-on-year in December, compared with a steeper 22.20% fall in November.
RBI RATE CUT BACKDROP
The benign inflation environment, along with strong economic growth, prompted the Reserve Bank of India to cut interest rates by 25 basis points last month. Expectations of another rate cut have been building as inflation remains well below the central bank’s comfort level.
India’s economy is estimated to grow 7.4% in the fiscal year ending March, providing a cushion against global challenges, including the impact of higher US tariffs on trade.
WHAT THIS MEANS FOR CONSUMERS
For households, the rise in retail inflation to 1.33% does not immediately translate into higher day-to-day expenses. Prices are still increasing at a very slow pace, and food items, especially vegetables, remain much cheaper than a year ago. This keeps pressure on household budgets low.
Lower inflation also supports cheaper borrowing. With interest rates already cut and more easing possible, consumers may see lower EMIs on home and personal loans. At the same time, savings returns may stay modest, pushing families to plan spending and investments carefully rather than relying on high deposit rates.
