The gaming world is in shock after reports confirmed that Vince Zampella, a key creative force behind the globally popular Call of Duty franchise, died in a tragic car accident in California on Sunday. Zampella was 55. According to officials, the fatal crash took place on a Los Angeles highway when a Ferrari carrying him and another individual veered off the road and slammed into a concrete barrier, BBC reports. The impact caused the vehicle to catch fire within moments, leaving little chance for rescue.
Authorities said there were two people inside the car at the time of the crash. The passenger was reportedly thrown out of the vehicle due to the force of the collision, while the driver remained trapped inside as the car became engulfed in flames. Both occupants died at the scene. Investigators are still working to determine who was driving and what caused the vehicle to lose control.
In a statement shared with the media, the California Highway Patrol said the car “left the roadway for reasons that are still unknown, struck a concrete divider, and was fully engulfed in fire shortly after.” No other vehicles were involved in the incident.
Zampella was widely regarded as one of the most influential minds in modern video gaming. He rose to prominence in the early 2000s as part of the team that created Call of Duty, a franchise inspired by real-world military conflicts that went on to redefine first-person shooters.
