The company has redesigned the model to handle longer, more detailed workloads in subjects like maths, science and programming. Launch arrives as Google’s Gemini 3 intensifies competition

Just weeks ago, CEO Sam Altman reportedly told employees that the company was in a “code red” situation and required an internal reset to match Google’s advances. That urgency echoes Google’s own code red moment back in 2022, just after ChatGPT became a global phenomenon. With GPT-5.2 now ready for rollout, Altman says he expects the company to steady itself by January and return to “a very strong position.” He also noted in an interview that “Gemini 3 has had less of an impact on our metrics than maybe we feared,” suggesting confidence in the new model’s direction.
A business-focused upgrade for enterprises
The company is committing to massive infrastructure expansion, which is projected to cross $1 trillion. It is leaning on business customers to support that growth. GPT-5.2 is positioned to help with exactly that, as OpenAI says the model can “unlock even more economic value for people,” particularly for tasks that involve automation, data analysis and repetitive work. Like previous versions, GPT-5.2 arrives quickly on the heels of the last few releases. Adult mode set for early 2026 launch
Alongside the model upgrade, OpenAI is also preparing a major change in how ChatGPT handles adult audiences. The company has already begun deploying age-prediction tools to identify whether a user is a minor.
