India batters failed miserably on Day 3 of the Guwahati Test

India were left staring at the grim prospect of a home series sweep after another batting collapse handed South Africa firm control on Day 3 of the second Test at Guwahati’s Barsapara Cricket Stadium on Monday. The visitors, already 1-0 up after their narrow win in Kolkata, extended their dominance by pushing the overall lead to 314 runs before ending the day at 26 without loss in their second innings, opting against enforcing the follow-on.

With two full days still remaining, South Africa hold every advantage and India’s hopes of avoiding a rare home series defeat appear increasingly bleak. India were bowled out for 201 in 83.5 overs earlier in the day, undone by tight and disciplined South African bowling. Openers Ryan Rickelton and Aiden Markram then negotiated eight overs in the final session, reaching 13 and 12 respectively, ensuring the visitors closed the day without damage.

South Africa’s first-innings 489 had already put India under pressure, and the hosts’ response only deepened the crisis. A second straight Test defeat at home now looms large unless India can produce something extraordinary over the final two days.

JANSEN HEROICS IN GUWAHATI

Marco Jansen was the outstanding figure of the day. After his crucial 93 in South Africa’s first-innings 489, the left-arm quick returned to dismantle India with figures of 6 for 48. His short-ball accuracy and sustained hostility left India in ruins at 201 all out, a total that never threatened the visitors’ dominance.

India resumed at 6 for 0 and started confidently through Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul. The pair negotiated the new ball without discomfort and raised a half-century opening stand. Jaiswal looked particularly fluent, advancing down the track to Simon Harmer and finding regular boundaries through cover and mid-wicket. He brought up his fifty in assertive fashion and appeared set for a substantial innings.

Rahul’s dismissal by Keshav Maharaj, edging a defensive shot to slip, triggered a collapse that would define the day. Jaiswal followed soon after when he edged Harmer to a cleverly positioned fielder at short third. From that point onwards, India’s innings began to unravel.

Sai Sudharsan, who had looked compact, perished to a mistimed pull that was brilliantly taken by Ryan Rickelton at midwicket. Rishabh Pant attempted a brief counterattack but his aerial shot against Jansen resulted in a faint edge to the keeper. Dhruv Jurel had already departed for a duck after failing to control a pull shot.

By the first interval, India had stumbled from 65 without loss to 102 for 4, and the slide continued in the second session. Jansen struck repeatedly with steep bounce and precise lengths. Nitish Kumar Reddy was undone by a sharp rising delivery and Aiden Markram completed an outstanding one-handed catch at slip. Ravindra Jadeja soon fell to another edge and the hosts sank to 122 for 7.

SUNDAR-KULDEEP HOLD FORT

Washington Sundar and Kuldeep Yadav provided the only meaningful resistance of the innings. The pair focussed on survival, adding 72 gritty runs while occupying more than 200 deliveries. It was the longest eighth-wicket stand for India against South Africa and temporarily quelled the visitors’ momentum.

Washington mixed determined defence with occasional controlled aggression, striking a six and three boundaries. Kuldeep’s vigil was especially notable. His 19 from 134 balls was the slowest and most composed innings played by any Indian batter in the series. South Africa’s bowlers probed relentlessly but the pair ensured India limped into the final session with some stability.

Harmer eventually broke the stand by drawing Washington into a tentative shot that carried to slip. The second new ball arrived immediately afterwards and Jansen returned to collect two more wickets, including Kuldeep through an outside edge. Jasprit Bumrah resisted briefly before holing out to complete Jansen’s six-for.

INDIA IN DEEP TROUBLE

Temba Bavuma declined the option of enforcing the follow-on despite holding a lead of 288. Rickelton and Markram walked out for South Africa’s second innings and signalled intent from the outset. Both batters struck early boundaries off Bumrah and looked at ease on a surface showing only modest wear. India had one opportunity to remove Markram but Rahul spilled a fast-travelling edge at second slip.

Mohammed Siraj bowled with energy and Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav each got an over before poor light forced the players off the field. South Africa closed on 26 without loss with all ten wickets in hand and complete control of the contest.

Two days remain and the match, barring a dramatic turn, appears firmly in South Africa’s grasp. India’s batting continues to show worrying fragility. Only Jaiswal and Washington displayed discipline and application while the remainder of the line-up succumbed to loose strokes or technical lapses. With the pitch expected to deteriorate further, India face an uphill task to avoid another heavy defeat at home.

A year ago, the thought of India losing a home Test series seemed far-fetched. Now, after three difficult days in Guwahati and an earlier setback in Kolkata, that outcome is a real and looming possibility as the Proteas look to complete a commanding tour.
