Perplexity’s Comet AI browser has transformed how one browses the web. The AI can complete tasks such as booking flights or shopping online on behalf of the user. Now, Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas has claimed that the browser can deprecate Android as it releases on the mobile platform.
On X, Srinivas revealed that early invite links for Comet were rolling out on Android. Since its initial release on desktop, Perplexity has relied on invite links to give early access to the app. Though Comet can be downloaded without any links for free on desktop now.
Aravind Srinivas stated the criteria for having a higher chance of getting the invite link for Comet on Android. He said, “It all comes down to your Perplexity Android usage and Pro/Max user status!” Thus, Perplexity is seemingly focusing on paid users and those who rely on its services on Android.
Comet can make Android obsolete
Android is the largest mobile operating system in the world. Users can have the AI complete a variety of tasks just by writing prompts, without any need for human interference. Aravind Srinivas is confident that Comet can make Android obsolete entirely.
He said, “Comet has the potential to deprecate Android.”
Perhaps indicating that users will no longer have to rely on operating systems and apps. Rather, Comet can do everything you might want from your device.
Srinivas has also stated that Comet will be launched soon on iOS.
Comet is not the only browser in the AI race
In recent weeks, it seems that the tech industry is witnessing another browser race. Perplexity’s Comet is not alone, with OpenAI also launching ChatGPT Atlas. Additionally, Microsoft and Google are adding more AI features to Edge and Chrome, respectively.
Interestingly, Srinivas-led Perplexity did try to make an offer to buy Google Chrome for $34.5 billion earlier this year.
Though one must note that most modern browsers today, including Comet, Edge and ChatGPT Atlas, use Chromium. Chromium is Google’s open-source web browser project, which also powers Chrome.
