Perplexity has officially made its Comet browser free for all users. Now, users can download the browser and use the Comet Assistant. The AI can do several tasks based on prompts, be it managing tabs, shopping online, or drafting emails.
On X, Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas announced that now all users will get access to Comet, including those on the free plan. He also revealed that the company will soon launch a mobile version of the AI browser.
Perplexity claims that the waitlist for Comet had crossed millions since July, and users were waiting to try the new AI browser. According to the company, users who tried Comet, asked 6 to 18 times more questions to Perplexity.
The Comet Assistant serves as a personal AI assistant, allowing users to get answers for any questions directly for any webpage. The AI can even search for flight tickets, shop online, as per the prompt from the user.
This announcement comes at a time when Google has integrated Gemini into Chrome. Earlier this year, Perplexity had made a $34.5 billion bid to acquire Chrome.
Perplexity had launched Comet in July this year, only for Perplexity Max subscribers. Others who wanted to try out Comet had to put their name on a waitlist. On September 22, Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas had made the browser available for all Pro subscribers in India.
Other AI firms are not behind in the browser race either. OpenAI’s Operator launched in January, with Anthropic introducing its own browser-based agent in August.
Perplexity launches Comet Plus
Over the year, a major debate in the world of AI has been the right of AI companies to use information online to train their models. Now, Perplexity has seemingly found a solution with Comet Plus.
Comet Plus is a $5 subscription for users and AI assistants’ access to journalism content, while compensating publishers. The company has roped in a handful of partners at launch of Comet Plus, including CNN and The Washington Post.
Perplexity Pro and Perplexity Max subscribers will get Comet Plus for free.
