Benchmark stock market indices closed flat on Monday, despite opening higher as investors on Dalal Street turned cautious over India-US trade talks and upcoming RBI MPC decisions.
The S&P BSE Sensex closed 61.52 points lower to end at 80,364.94, while the NSE Nifty50 lost 19.80 points to close at 24,634.90.
Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Investments Limited, said that the domestic market concluded a volatile session on a flat note as investors turned more cautious ahead of a holiday-led truncated week and continued FII selling.
“Lack of clarity in the US-India trade deal and prolonging pressure on IT & pharma indices are near-term concerns for the market. Investors await the RBI policy outcome this week; the central bank is expected to keep the rates unchanged to contain volatility in the rupee. The supportive fiscal measures and a stronger demand outlook for H2FY26 may lead the central bank to upgrade its FY26 GDP growth forecast,” he added.
Among the top gainers at the closing bell, Titan led with a rise of 2.30%, followed by State Bank of India which gained 1.58%. Eternal Health climbed 1.18%, while Trent advanced 1.08% and Bharat Electronics Limited rose 1.05%.
Axis Bank faced the biggest decline, dropping 1.91%. Mahindra & Mahindra fell 1.65%, while Larsen & Toubro went down 1.17%. ICICI Bank lost 1.01% and Bharti Airtel declined 0.81%.
The Nifty indices displayed a mixed picture as trading ended today. The Nifty Midcap100 gained 0.27% while Nifty Smallcap100 fell 0.07%, and India VIX dropped 0.52%.
Among the sectoral indices, several showed positive momentum with Nifty PSU Bank leading at 1.78%, followed by Nifty Oil & Gas at 1.35%, Nifty Realty at 0.88%, Nifty Metal at 0.35%, Nifty FMCG at 0.18%, and Nifty Financial Services at 0.09%.
Nifty Media faced the biggest decline at 0.85%, followed by Nifty Private Bank which dropped 0.29%, Nifty Consumer Durables at 0.19%, Nifty Auto at 0.18%, Nifty Pharma at 0.15%, Nifty Healthcare at 0.08%, and Nifty IT at 0.03%.
