Mark Zuckerberg is once again trying to put a computer on your face, but this time, it’s not about escaping into a virtual world. On Wednesday, the Meta CEO pulled the wraps off the company’s latest AI-powered wearables: a new line of Ray-Ban glasses complete with a tiny display hidden inside the lens.

The new Meta Ray-Ban Displays aren’t about making you look like a cyborg. Instead, they’re designed to look just like a stylish pair of prescription lenses or sunglasses, but with the added magic of Meta’s AI quietly working in the background. The idea is simple, rather than constantly glancing down at your phone, you can interact with messages, photos, navigation, and more, all while still making eye contact with the real world.

“Glasses are the ideal form factor for personal super Intelligence because they let you stay present at the moment while getting access to all of these AI capabilities to make you smarter, help you communicate better, improve your memory, improve your senses,” Zuckerberg declared during his keynote at Meta’s annual Connect event in Menlo Park, California.

Meta Ray-Ban display

Meta has been tinkering with smart specs for more than a decade, but this year’s model might finally feel futuristic enough to tempt the masses. The Displays feature a miniature screen tucked into the top right corner of the lens, projecting information as if it’s floating a few feet in front of you.

Think of everything you already love about Ray-Ban Meta glasses, now imagine them supercharged. That’s what the new Meta Ray-Ban Display is all about. With a high-res display and a clever neural band, these specs aren’t just glasses; they’re your personal assistant, entertainer, translator, and navigator, all tucked neatly into a stylish pair of frames.

We’ve built Meta Ray-Ban Display to give you more confidence, sharper clarity, and a little extra magic in the way you see and do things every day. Here’s what makes them special:

Meta AI with Visuals: Why settle for a voice in your ear when you can have answers appear right in front of your eyes? With visuals, Meta AI doesn’t just tell you how to do something, it shows you. Recipes, how-tos, or even troubleshooting steps are easier than ever, and you can flick through instructions with a simple thumb swipe using the Neural Band.

Messaging & Video Calls: Forget pulling out your phone mid-chat. Now, WhatsApp pings, Insta Reels, or Messenger notes just pop up on your lenses, private, hands-free, and easy to read with a quick pinch. You can even answer video calls and let mates see exactly what you’re seeing, whether you’re at a gig or just showing off your cat doing something ridiculous.

Preview & Zoom: No more dodgy framing or blurry snaps. The real-time camera viewfinder lets you line up the perfect shot before you press capture. Want a closer look? Zoom in smoothly, then pick and share your favourites straight from the display.

Pedestrian Navigation: Lost? Not anymore. Choose your destination and get turn-by-turn directions mapped out right in your glasses. No phone juggling, no missing street signs. Pedestrian navigation is rolling out in beta across select cities, with more coming soon.

Live Captions & Translation: Conversations just levelled up. Meta Ray-Ban Display can show live captions of what’s being said to you, or translate select languages on the spot. No more awkward nodding or fumbling with apps. You stay present, engaged, and clued in.

Music Playback: See your playlists in real time, swipe to skip tracks, and pinch-and-twist your fingers to adjust the volume like you’re turning up a vintage dial.

The best part? Only you can see the display. To everyone else, you’ll just look like you’re staring off into space, which could lead to some awkward encounters if you’re secretly reading texts while pretending to listen. Thankfully, the screen can be switched off whenever you want to return to normal glasses mode.

Meta claims that its new spectacles can run for six hours before needing a charge, with a case that adds another 30 hours. The neural wristband lasts 18 hours on its own and is splash-resistant, so you won’t panic if you’re caught in the rain.

The Meta Ray-Ban Displays hit US stores on September 30 with a price tag of $799 (around Rs 70,279), available at select outlets including Best Buy, Verizon, and LensCrafters.

The new way of gestures

Meet the Meta Neural Band: a stylish wristband that takes cutting-edge surface electromyography (EMG) research and turns it into an input device straight out of science fiction. Forget tapping, swiping, and fiddling with dials — this little marvel lets you scroll, click, and soon even write out messages, all with the tiniest finger movements.

The wild part? The band is so sensitive it can pick up muscle signals before you even notice the movement yourself.

According to the announcement, the real breakthrough was training deep learning models on data from nearly 2,00,000 volunteers. Thanks to that, the wristband works seamlessly for almost anyone straight out of the box, no fiddly calibration needed. That’s a big deal, given how different people’s muscles are. Beyond everyday convenience, think about what this could mean for people with spinal cord injuries, limb differences, tremors, or other neuromotor conditions. A world where gestures, not touchscreens, do the talking.

And here’s the kicker: your muscles have thousands of motor neurons, which means EMG could, in theory, be mapped to an almost unlimited set of gestures. Translation? The Neural Band isn’t just for glasses. This could be the ultimate control system for any device.

Naturally, all the heavy lifting happens on the wristband itself. Raw EMG signals never leave the device, only the processed “event” (like a click) is sent over to your glasses or whichever gadget you’re using. This on-device smarts also makes haptic feedback snappy and keeps timing perfectly in sync.

Of course, none of that matters if the thing isn’t wearable. So Meta designed the Neural Band to be tough, light, and comfortable enough for all-day use. You get up to 18 hours of battery life, an IPX7 water-resistance rating (splash-proof and rain-proof), and some seriously nerdy engineering touches. The electrodes are coated in diamond-like carbon, while the band itself is reinforced with Vectran, a woven mesh that’s as strong as steel but soft enough to flex. In case that sounds familiar, it’s the same stuff NASA used on the Mars Rover’s landing pads. Yes, your wristband shares DNA with interplanetary exploration gear.

Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2

For those not ready to splurge, Meta also unveiled the Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 at $379 (around Rs 33,336). They look familiar but now boast brighter colours, longer battery life (eight hours on a single charge), and sharper cameras capable of recording 3K video. Upcoming updates will let users shoot slow-motion and hyperlapse clips too.

screenshot 2025 09 18 091453

The Gen 2s also feature a nifty “conversation focus” mode that uses their open-ear speakers to boost the voice of whoever you’re talking to in a crowded room, essentially turning your specs into a personal hearing assistant.

Oakley Meta Vanguard: Built for athletes

If Ray-Bans are for everyday use, Oakley Meta Vanguard is for the sweaty, high-intensity crowd. Developed with input from pro athletes, these glasses feature Oakley’s wraparound design with PRIZM lenses, IP67 water and dust resistance, and a snug Three-Point Fit system optimised for helmets and hats.

The open-ear speakers are Meta’s loudest yet, six decibels louder than previous Oakley smart glasses, with a five-mic array to cut down wind noise. A 12-megapixel wide-angle camera captures 3K video, plus Slow Motion, Hyperlapse and stabilised clips, perfect for your next downhill dash or marathon milestone.

meta oakley 1

Battery life is optimised for endurance, providing a total of nine hours, including six hours of continuous playback, and an additional 36 hours from the charging case. A 20-minute quick charge gets you to 50 per cent, claims Meta.

The big win here is fitness integrations. Meta AI now pairs with Garmin and Strava, letting you ask, “Hey Meta, what’s my heartrate?” or “Am I on pace?” without checking a watch. Status LEDs in your peripheral vision give quick-read progress updates mid-workout.

Autocapture automatically records clips when you hit milestones, think sprint bursts, distance goals, or elevation climbs, so you’ll have highlight reels without touching your phone. On Strava, you can overlay metrics directly onto videos and share them instantly. It’s less sweaty selfie, more of a motivational sports montage.

However, not everything went smoothly at the live demo. When Zuckerberg attempted to show off the glasses’ ability to take cooking directions from Meta AI, the assistant got stage fright and spat out nonsense. Later, during a video call demo with Meta’s CTO Andrew Bosworth, the accept button refused to appear on the display, according to the reports. “We’ll debug that later,” Bosworth shrugged, prompting chuckles from the audience.
