Benchmark equity indices ended Wednesday’s session on a firm note as investors stayed optimistic about the outcome of ongoing trade negotiations between India and the United States. Hopes of a favourable agreement lifted sentiment, even though trading activity remained largely range-bound.
The S&P BSE Sensex rose 313.02 points to close at 82,693.71, while the NSE Nifty50 added 91.25 points to end at 25,330.25. Broader markets also held their ground, with midcap and smallcap indices finishing in the green.
According to Ajit Mishra, SVP – Research at Religare Broking, the day’s gains reflected a “positive yet cautious undertone.” He noted that while IT, banking and auto stocks supported the upmove, profit-taking was evident in metals, FMCG and pharma.
Mishra added that optimism around domestic reforms and strong local fund flows continue to underpin sentiment, even as persistent foreign investor selling and global uncertainty cap sharp rallies. He sees the Nifty inching towards the 25,500 mark, but advises a “buy on dips” approach with support around the 25,050–25,150 range.
Brokerages highlighted that the day’s trade was more steady than spectacular. Ashika Institutional Equities said the Nifty opened strong and sustained gains but moved within a narrow 40-point band for most of the session. Buying was most visible in PSU banks, automobiles, IT and oil & gas, while metals and consumer-facing sectors lagged.
In the derivatives market, traders built fresh positions in select counters such as Persistent Systems, Dalmia Bharat, Amber Enterprises, MCX and Tata Chemicals, indicating heightened activity even in an otherwise subdued session.
