Fight For Etire Day: Washington Sundar On Mantra After Brave Hundred In 4th Test Draw

Washington Sundar revealed his mantra that he followed when he scored a fighting hundred on the final day of the Manchester Test. Sundar remained unbeaten on 101 as he scored his maiden century and put on a 203-run stand with Ravindra Jadeja to save the match and keep India alive in the series.

Speaking after his rescue act, Sundar said that the knock feels very special, and he was lost for words to describe the feeling. The all-rounder was promoted to bat at No.5 on the day as India were protecting the injured Rishabh Pant and Sundar said his focus was on fighting the entire day to secure the draw. The all-rounder said that was the message he got from coach Gautam Gambhir as well.

“It feels very special. Honestly, it’s difficult to put this feeling into words because a Test hundred is something truly unique. Every century matters, but this one means a lot. I got the opportunity to bat at No. 5, and my only focus was to fight for an entire day. That was the only message from the coach as well. I’m just really glad we managed to draw this match,” said Sundar while speaking to JioHotstar.

‘Play to the merit of the ball’

Sundar said that the conversation between him and Jadeja was to play to the merit of the ball, and the focus was to stay disciplined throughout their partnership. The all-rounder said that it felt amazing to secure the draw and push the series to the Oval Test, where India can level things.

“We just wanted to play to the merit of the ball, especially with the wicket offering something to both seamers and spinners. Our focus was to stay disciplined and give everything we could. To experience the moments we did today, especially after managing to draw the game, feels amazing. I think the whole team played really well throughout the Test match, and now it’s going to be even more exciting heading into the next one,” said Sundar.

The Oval Test will begin on July 31.
